Electric Two-wheeler and Electric Bicycles are becoming very popular means of transportation. Either you want to be environment friendly or you want to avoid public transport in the Covid19 affected world, electric two-wheeler provides a very good option.
There are many advantages of these two wheelers
- Cheap to operate: Compared to their petrol counterparts, these vehicles are cost effective to operate. Typical electric bicycle goes around 40 km on a 250 watt-hour battery. To charge a 250 watt-hour battery you only need Indian Rs 3 to 4 worth of electricity (USD 5 cents). If you work anywhere in the ten km radius of your house, then this is the most ecofriendly solution for your transportation. It will cost around Rs 40 (USD 50 cents) per day for the same distance in a petrol scooter.
- Low maintenance needs: In an electric two-wheeler, there is nothing complicated to maintain. You need to make sure you buy your vehicle from a good quality manufacturer and the lithium ion battery is covered by 3-year warranty. For 3 years you will not incur any maintenance cost related to the drive system or the battery. On the other hand for a petrol scooter, you must change engine oil and do checkups based on km driven to keep the vehicle healthy and operational.
- Never visit a gas station: In today's Covid19 affected world, not going into a public place and being able to charge at home is a great advantage.
- Charge rate: Lower the charge rate better. It takes more time to charge the battery with lower C rate (Charge current/Battery Ah), but batteries generally like to be charged as slow as possible. With 40 km range I think most of the batteries will get charged in 3 to 4 hours without any issue. It is recommended to charge the battery at 0.3c or lower (0.3c = ah rating of the battery *0.3). You can easily check this by checking the amp rating of the charger.
- Charge Temp: Charging battery in hot or cold temp is bad for cycle life. 25 to 30-degree Celsius is the best temp to charge your battery at. When battery is used it often heats up. As almost all two-wheeler battery packs are sealed type with no cooling, the battery temperature inside will be higher after usage. So do not plug in immediately after using the battery. If you keep it for an hour or so before starting to charge, then that will give battery enough time to reach the room temp. If air conditioning is on, then that will even allow battery to reach its optimal charging temp of 25 to 30 degree Celcius.
- Depth of Discharge control: Lower the DOD better. If you do not utilize or need all the range for your EV, the best way to extend the battery life is to restrict charging to 80% of its capacity. Many battery packs come with LED indication. If you have 4 indicator lights, then charge only up to 3rd light. Basically keeping top of charge at 75% of the maximum capacity. for 36V lithium ion NMC, typically the maximum battery voltage will be 42V, but if you charge only till 40V or 39V, your battery life will almost double. Another charging habit to adapt is not to keep it plugged in overnight. If the battery charger has a cutoff or battery itself has a charge complete cutoff, then it is ok to plug it in overnight. But many batteries do not come with such cutoff, in that case battery voltage is maintained at highest voltage for extended period of time. This floating voltage will affect the cycle life of the battery.
- Storage temp: Keep the battery at room temperature. Avoiding direct sunlight and hot temp is important to extend the battery life. Try to store the battery during or after charging at room temp closer to 25 to 30-degree Celsius. For vehicles without removal battery, park the vehicle in shade away from direct sunlight and heat. If you plan to not use the vehicle for some time, then better to keep the battery at 50% or lower SOC. This practice will help reduce the calendar fade of the battery.
So, in this blog post I am going to talk about how to improve the battery life for eBike, eScooter or for any EV for that matter
Most of the e-bikes and eScooters on the market use lithium ion battery packs. Some do offer different types of lead acid batteries but if you really want to maximize your return on investment, I recommend to avoid lead acid battery solution. The life of a lithium ion battery can be extended by using following few steps.
Overview
Most of the e-bikes come with a removable battery. Removable battery allows you to take the battery and charge it at a place of your choosing. In the current market there are many 36-volt 10ah and 36-volt 14ah batteries available for eBikes and 48v/60v systems for eScooters. Most of these batteries use cylindrical format 18650 cells. Some of the batteries do use pouch cells but those are very rare.
Charging: This is the most important thing to be careful about. The battery degradation is predominantly caused by charging. How fast you charge, at what temperature you charge, and till what SOC (State of Charge) you charge will determine the cycle life. Depth of discharge (DOD) is another factor that will affect the life of the battery. We charging and DOD are controlled then battery will have a very good life and give maximum bang for your buck.
If you follow these steps, then a good quality lithium ion battery can last easily close to 1500 cycles. Now let us say you get 30km for ebike and 60km in two-wheeler (With lower Depth of discharge). Then your two-wheeler is good for 45,000km of eBike and 75,000km for eScooter. Based on the data battery should easily last you more than 5 years. Taking small steps can go a long way to improve your battery life and in turn reducing your cost of ownership.
